The Georgian parliament recently approved in its third and final reading a comprehensive package of amendments that fundamentally change the rules for international migrants. The reform, initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, states that old Soviet laws no longer apply to modern migration challenges.

The draft law introduces a new legal framework for foreigners residing in Georgia, including diplomats and legal residents, establishing a clear and consistent system.

The law also provides for the issuance of residence permits and visas, as well as the regulation of language proficiency requirements — either in the official language or in state exams.

The new regulations aim to simplify procedures for migrants and improve the overall migration system in Georgia, making it more transparent and accessible.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has prepared detailed guidelines for state agencies on the implementation, including timelines, evaluations, and student programs.
