Despite another record in the number of guests, the financial return from international tourism to Georgia has declined. In the third quarter of 2026, foreign visitors spent 5.7 billion lari in the country, which is 8% less than in the same period last year. The average cost of a single trip fell by as much as 11%, amounting to 2,194 lari.
This data is published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
From July to September 2026, Georgia was visited by 3.1 million non-residents (+3.6% compared to the third quarter of 2025). Of these, 2.6 million were recorded as tourist visits (+3.3%), while the unique number of tourists themselves totaled 2.1 million people (+4.7%).
The average number of overnight stays per visit rose by 2.2%, to 6.4 nights (compared with 6.3 a year earlier). 77% of all visits in the third quarter were repeat visits.
Although travelers began staying in Georgia slightly longer, the average trip spending noticeably declined, which indicates a shift in spending structure and a transition of tourists to more economical consumption models.
According to the relevant agency, from January to September the country received a total of 6.1 million international travelers (+0.04%), of which 4.4 million were tourists (+2.3%), which became an absolute historic record.
Russia remains the leader in inbound flows, showing confident growth. Among the top five, Azerbaijan demonstrated the greatest surge (+13.1%), which is linked to the gradual revival of land and land-passenger transport connections. At the same time, tourist flows from neighboring Turkey and Armenia declined by 4.2% and 6.1%, respectively.
An international visitor is any foreign citizen who enters the country (including day trips without overnight stays, transit, and shopping tours).
A tourist is a visitor who spends at least one night in the country.
