October in Kakheti is the season when the Alazani Valley fills with the scent of fresh juice, the creak of carts and the sound of laughter. The grape harvest, rtveli in Georgian, is far more than farm work here: it is the year's great celebration. A week on this wine trail lets you live the tradition with your hands, your feet and, of course, at the table.
Begin in Telavi and the villages around it. Kakheti is the heart of Georgian winemaking, and the ancient method of fermenting wine in clay qvevri is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Many family cellars, or marani, welcome guests to join the picking. You snip heavy bunches, fill baskets and learn to tell one variety from another. White grapes such as Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane share the season with dark Saperavi, whose juice stains hands purple for days.
The most memorable moment is the stomping. Grapes are tipped into a broad wooden or stone trough, and you press them barefoot, feeling the warm, slippery pulp underfoot. The juice, along with skins, seeds and sometimes stems, is then poured into qvevri buried in the earth. This is how Kakheti's celebrated amber wines gain their colour and tannic depth. Your host will likely explain how the vessel is sealed, and you realise you are touching thousands of years of experience.
The work is rewarded with treats. Look for churchkhela, strings of walnuts dipped in thickened grape juice, hanging to dry on verandas. Try fresh grape juice before it becomes wine, and warm shoti bread baked in a tone, the round clay oven.
Evenings belong to the supra. A tamada leads the table, offering toasts to peace, ancestors, children and guests. Expect khinkali, mtsvadi, pkhali, satsivi, fresh cheese and lobiani, with wine poured from jugs. Polyphonic Georgian singing, also recognised by UNESCO, often rises spontaneously, and hearing it in a Kakhetian courtyard is unforgettable.
Between harvest days, visit Sighnaghi with its views of the Greater Caucasus, Tsinandali with its gardens and historic estate, and Alaverdi and Nekresi monasteries. These stops give you a breather and show how history and wine share a single landscape.
