Winter in Georgia smells of snow, crisp mountain air and the promise of adventure. The 2026–2027 ski season at the country's resorts officially begins on December 20, a perfect reason to pack your bags and head for the snowy peaks of the Caucasus.
On that day, four destinations will open their slopes at the same time: Gudauri, Bakuriani, Goderdzi and Mestia, where skiing begins at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi. Each resort has its own character, so you can choose a winter to suit your taste, from a lively flagship to high-mountain Svaneti.
Gudauri deserves special attention. For the new season, the resort gets a significantly upgraded technical base and an expanded skiing area. The old Khada and Snowpark lifts have been replaced by two new surface (drag) lifts with a combined length of 1,400 metres. A 200-metre magic carpet is being installed for beginners, and the work is being carried out by industry leader Doppelmayr-Garaventa, an Austrian-Swiss company.
There will be more runs, too. Two new descents, Kobi 3 and Tatra 3, are being completed with a total length of 6 kilometres. Once they open, the length of marked pistes in Gudauri will reach 86 kilometres. Artificial snowmaking systems are being installed on the Soliko and Kikilo runs, covering 7.5 kilometres of slope. On the Akhali Gudaura run, modern lighting is being installed, which will allow night skiing to launch in full.
All works are planned to be finished before the official opening on December 20, so guests can look forward to refreshed slopes and comfortable infrastructure. If you are planning a trip, a few practical notes help: Tbilisi is introducing yellow box markings at intersections to ease traffic, and the eKalata mobile app lets you compare supermarket prices and build a virtual shopping basket before you head to the mountains.
