The National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia has announced plans to invest over $2 million in the comprehensive restoration and renovation of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The estimated project cost is about 5 million lari (approximately $1.9 million), according to the agency bm.ge.

The restoration is planned as a two-stage program, scheduled for 2026-2027. The agency emphasizes that the $5 million is not solely for financing but also includes the preliminary budget for the purchase of materials. The funds will be allocated gradually, based on necessity.

The restoration of the cathedral is expected to begin after the completion of massive repair works scheduled for 2025, which include the restoration of the church's frescoes in the chapel and the martyrs' section. Following this, the agency plans to finance the restoration of the cathedral's interior paintings, which are considered a significant cultural heritage of the country.
